SEO Basics

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It refers to how easily people can find your website when they search on Google or other search engines.

You do not need to be a technical expert to improve your SEO. A few simple steps can make a real difference.

What Is a Meta Title?

The meta title is the name that appears in the browser tab and in Google search results. It is one of the most important SEO fields on any page.

A good meta title:

  • Clearly describes what the page is about.
  • Includes words your customers might search for.
  • Is between 50 and 60 characters long (roughly 8 to 12 words).

Example: Instead of Home or Welcome, use something like Plumbing Services in Manchester - Fast & Reliable.

How to Edit a Meta Title

  1. Open the page you want to edit.
  2. Scroll down to the SEO section.
  3. Find the Meta Title field.
  4. Type your updated title.
  5. Click Save.

Note: The SEO section may be near the bottom of the page editor. Scroll down if you cannot see it.

What Is a Meta Description?

The meta description is the short paragraph that appears below your page title in Google search results. It does not directly affect your ranking, but it does influence whether someone clicks on your result.

A good meta description:

  • Summarises what the page is about in one or two sentences.
  • Is between 140 and 160 characters long.
  • Encourages the reader to visit your site.
  • Includes your key service or location if relevant.

Example:We offer fast, reliable plumbing services across Manchester. Available 7 days a week with no call-out charge for the first visit.

How to Edit a Meta Description

  1. Open the page you want to edit.
  2. Scroll to the SEO section.
  3. Find the Meta Description field.
  4. Write your updated description.
  5. Click Save.

Simple SEO Best Practices

You do not need to do anything complicated to improve your search visibility. Focus on these basics:

Write naturally for your customers, not for search engines. Use the words your customers would actually type into Google. Think about the questions they might ask, such as "emergency plumber near me" or "wedding cake delivery London."

Give every page a unique title. Do not use the same title on multiple pages. Each page should have a title that reflects its specific content.

Fill in the meta description for every page. Even a simple, honest description is better than leaving the field blank.

Use clear headings in your content. When you write page content, use your main subject in the first heading where possible.

Do not stuff keywords. Using the same word or phrase repeatedly looks unnatural and can actually harm your search ranking. Write as you would speak to a customer.

Checking Your Changes

After updating your SEO fields and saving, you can check how your page would appear in Google by searching for your website. Results can take a few days or weeks to update in Google after you make changes. This is normal and not something you need to worry about.
