Managing Media
Media refers to the images and files stored in your Foundry account. This guide explains how to upload, organise, and use images across your website.
What Is the Media Library?
The media library is a central place where all your images and files are stored. When you add an image to a page, you choose it from this library.
Think of it like a shared photo album for your website.
To open the media library, click Media Library in the left menu.
Uploading Images
Images are uploaded directly through image fields on pages and blog posts — there is no standalone upload button in the Media Library itself.
To upload a new image:
- Open the page or blog post where you want to add the image.
- Find the relevant image field (for example, Featured Image or Background Image).
- Click the upload area or drag and drop your image file onto it.
- The image uploads immediately and is saved to your media library automatically.
Once uploaded, the image will appear in the Media Library and can be referenced from other places in your site.
You can upload images in the following formats:
- JPG or JPEG (best for photographs)
- PNG (best for logos or images with transparent backgrounds)
- WebP (a modern format that loads quickly)
Replacing an Image on a Page
If you want to swap out an image that is already being used on your website:
- Go to the page where the image appears.
- Click the image upload area and select a new file from your computer, or drag and drop a new image onto it.
- Save the page.
The old image is not deleted from your library automatically. It stays in the media library until you remove it manually.
Deleting Images
To remove an image from your library:
- Open Media Library in the left menu.
- Find the image you want to delete.
- Click on the image to open the preview panel.
- Click the Delete file button.
Warning: Only delete images if you are sure they are not being used on your website. Deleting an image that is still in use will cause a blank space or broken image on the relevant page.
If you are unsure, leave the image in the library. Storage space is not a concern for occasional uploads.
Best Practices for Images
Following these tips will help your website look its best and load quickly for visitors.
File size
- Aim for images under 500KB where possible.
- Large image files slow down your website for visitors.
- You can compress images for free at squoosh.app or tinypng.com before uploading.
Dimensions
- Hero banner images work best at 1920 x 1080 pixels or similar wide proportions.
- Profile photos or team images work best at a square ratio, such as 800 x 800 pixels.
- If an image looks stretched or cropped oddly, it may be the wrong dimensions for that position.
File names
- Name your files with clear descriptions, such as
team-photo-2025.jpgrather thanIMG_4873.jpg. - This makes it easier to find images later in your library.
Organising Your Media Library
As your library grows, it can become harder to find specific images. A few habits will keep it tidy:
- Delete images you no longer need (as long as they are not in use).
- Use clear, descriptive file names when uploading.
- If you notice duplicates, keep the best version and remove the others.
